Welcome to Year 3

As the children begin KS2, we continue to encourage the to devlop their independence and resilience. the children will meet many new aspects of the curriculum for the first time, which may seem daunting at first. But with a 'have a go' attitude, they will soon develop the confidence and skills required. Please pop in and see us if you would like to know more about an area your child has been studying.

Reading

This continues to be crucial, even for children who are now confident at reading aloud. In Year 3, we focus particularly on understanding the texts that we read and identifying the meaning of new vocabulary. We would be grateful if you would hear your child read at least 3 times a week and sign their reading diary. We appreciate your support in hearing your child read - it really does make a difference!

The children are responsible for changing their own reading book, which can be done at the start of the day or during our daily reading session. They are also responsible for taking their reading book home every day, although we will remind them!

Spellings

In Year 3, we follow the Read, Write, Inc scheme for spelling. The children will have a daily spelling session, often working with partners to look at spelling patterns. In addition, we will also look at the 'tricky' words which are exceptions to the normal rules. Six 'tricky' words will be stuck in your child's spelling log and these will be tested on a Monday morning. The test will be done in the spelling section of your child's reading diary so that you can see how they got on.

We would  be grateful if you would sign the spelling log each week to confirm that you have seen the words that your child is practising.

Homework

Children will bring home their yellow homework book on a Tuesday. This will usually be a piece of English or Maths linked to our classwork, although research or art projects are set from time to time. Please write a comment at the bottom of your child's homework, if you wish. Homework should be returned to the box in the classroom by the following Monday at the latest !
