Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5 ! During the year children have the opportunity to build on the foundations set in lower key stage two whilst increasing their knowledge in all areas of the curriculum. Children's independence and resilience is nurtured in order to grow to prepare them for year 6.

At the start of the autumn term children go on a two night residential to an outdoor pursuits centre where they have the opportunity to go caving, kayaking, canoeing, fly on an aerial zip wire and numerous other heart raising activities. It is a fantastic trip, it facilitates children's team building skills and allows them to grow in confidence.

Children are encouraged to prepare themselves for lessons and be responsible for organising their things such as P.E. kits, homework, reading and spelling books. I encourage PE kits to be in school everyday and reading books / diaries and spelling log books should go home each night and returned to school each day.

Homework is given out on Friday and collected in on a Thursday. Spare homework is available in the classroom.

Spellings are given out on Wednesday and children are tested on a Monday.

Our main topics are Ancient Greece and Britains settlement by the Anglo Saxons, which provides a variety of cross cirricular activities. We make clay pots, use role play to recall myths and legends and make our own Greek theatre masks. We cover properties and changes in materials leading on to forces and earth and space after Christmas. Children have the opportunity to visit the Space Centre and Offa's Dyke.

Please feel free to come and see me regarding any further questions you may have.

Many Thanks
